208. $400
Spencer, Hotchkiss & Co. Salem Bridge shelf
clock, 1829-1832. A 32-inch by 18-inch case with mahogany veneer, flat side columns, a carved splat, and carved feet. The veneer is glossy but there are many repairs around the door and missing veneer along the sides of the base and above the feet. The carved splat is impressive but probably did not start out with this clock and may not belong with a Salem Bridge clock. The feet also appear to be slightly too large replacements, causing the clock to tilt backward. There are turned feet in back. The dial glass is old but is likely a replacement (newer putty), the lower glass is modern with a nicely painted tablet. The
wood dial is faded from cleaning, the hands are appropriate replacements but not made for a Salem Bridge clock. The brass, 8-day,
time-and-strike movement is not signed (typical); it will run for 10-20 min and stop, and I cannot get it to strike. There are
two 8-day weights. The label is worn and missing parts of the makers’ names, but mostly legible. $400–$800.
