Union Clock Co. and Jerome & Co. miniature shelf clocks,ca. 1854. The Union Clock Co. existed for just one year (1854) in Bristol, CT. Jerome & Co. was a trade name for clocks
made by the New Haven Clock Co., some of which were sold in England. The two clocks are 9 and 10.75 inches tall, respectively. The UCC clock is grain-painted to resemble rosewood; the Jerome clock appears to have been grain-painted as well, but most of the
paint has been worn off. Both clocks have the original glasses – note that the UCC clock has a full door glass with the lower
section reverse-painted; the Jerome clock has two glasses, the lower glass with the original tablet. Both tablets are in good
condition. The UCC dial is very worn paper over metal, probably original, while the Jerome dial is painted, again probably original,
with considerable flaking. The reverse side of the Jerome dial has a painted dial on it, with worse flaking. The hands
on both clocks are matched and probably original. Each has a 30-hour, time-only, spring-driven movement that is running without
problem; the UCC movement is unsigned, the Jerome movement bears the New Haven CC label and there is an embossed New Haven pendulum
bob. Both have good labels inside. The Jerome clock is called the Rocket. Both nice examples and uncommon; both
for one money. $50–$150.
