Hollow column clock, ca. 1840. The label is
lost, so we don’t know who made this clock. The movement is by Seth Thomas, but he did not make hollow column clocks, and the
wire gong is by Ingraham, who also did not make hollow column clocks. The case bears some similarity to hollow columns by Bartholomew,
mostly with the crest. The clock stands 37 inches tall on paw feet that are probably not original. The mahogany veneer
is good, including on the columns, and has some patina. The dial glass and lower tablet are modern, the mirror in the middle
may be original. The wooden dial is old but not original, has been cut to fit and repainted, slightly less than professionally. The hands are replacements. The Seth Thomas 30-hour, time-and-strike movement is signed and marked Plymouth Hollow. It
is running and striking on the wire gong, driven by two cylindrical weights that are not original. This clock sold at Schmidt’s
Antiques in 2020 for $225. $100–$250.
