167. $200
Wm. L. Gilbert hollow column, ca. 1850. Gilbert worked with more people than you can shake a stick at, constantly forming and reforming partnerships and businesses. Here he is on his own, probably until about 1857. Note the similarity between this clock and the hollow column from his preceding
company (#166). The case is 28 inches tall with good mahogany veneer all around, including the columns. There are a few
chips on edges. The two glasses are original as is the mirror; all have the original putty in place. The bottom tablet
has been repainted in the door, not quite up to par, however; it could be repainted for a big improvement. The contoured metal
dial is an old repaint and is now faded and yellowed. The hands are period. The 30-hour time-and-strike brass movement
is running and striking a wire gong, driven by two proper and possibly original 2.5-lb cylindrical weights. The movement is
die-stamped “Wm L Gilbert, Winchester CT, U.S.A.” The upper interior is painted green and there is a very darkened and tattered
paper label in the lower section. This clock sold in 2018 for $475. $200–$400.
