130.            $50

Atkins & Downs (for George Mitchell) “Eight Day Clock”, 1831-1832.  Not quite what it appears, as the 8-day wooden movement has been replaced with a Seth Thomas 8-day, time-only, brass, spring-driven movement.  The 37-inch case has carved columns and splat and an old finish on mahogany veneer.  The dial glass is original but the mirrors appear to be old replacements; the bottom mirror would originally have been a reverse-painted image. The wooden dial board is dark and the numbering has been strengthened; note the additional hole drilled to accommodate the brass movement. The hands are period, with the hour hand adjusted to fit the ST hour cannon.  It is running.  There is a steel bell but no strike chain, and the bell is not original.  The pendulum bob is from the late 1800’s.  There is a dark and stained label inside.  $50–$150.
