R. Smith & Co. 30-hour carved column & splat, 1832-1833.  Ransom Smith was in business in Watertown CT for only a short time before moving to New York City in the 1840’s, where he made and sold clocks on Bowery St. in lower Manhattan.  This refinished 34-inch case has mahogany veneer in very good condition with two sets of carved half-columns on each side, and a carved eagle splat.  The dial glass is original, the lower glass modern with a well-done tablet.  The wooden dial has filled winding holes and has been repainted; the hands may be period/original. The 30-hour, time-and-strike wooden movement will run for a few minutes and will strike on an iron bell, driven by period weights. There is a darkened and stained label inside.  There are only two R Smith clocks on LiveAuctioneers and neither is similar to this model.  A rare maker.  $175–$300.
