Jeromes’ & Darrow bronzed looking glass shelf clock,
1828-1834. A second example of this classic model; the case is 34.5 inches tall with good mahogany veneer and still-bright bronze
stenciling on the half-columns and splat. There is a thick, old finish on the case, just the way you want it. The door
hinges on the left, the latch on the right side in an ivory escutcheon does not work but the door stays shut. The dial glass
is original with the original putty, the mercury mirror is also likely original and in good condition. Note the gold trim border
around the mirror. Everything is great so far, but now we come to the dial. Awful. A travesty. Repainted improperly,
with a faint grey squirrel at the bottom, yellow oak leaves and acorns in the corners, poor numbering, and miscolored chapter rings. I can hardly stand it, abuse of such an important clock. The hands, on the other hand (sorry), are proper and may be original. The wooden 30-hour, time-and-strike movement is a Terry-type movement; this one will strike but I can’t keep it running. There
are two proper, period weights and a period pendulum bob, and a dark and worn label inside. Again, not a beautiful clock, but
it deserves respect. Find a new dial for it. $100–$200.
