99. $600
Eli Terry pillar & scroll, ca. 1823. One of the
hardest clocks to find, by Mr. Terry himself. The case is 31 inches tall with the brass urn finials on wooden posts; the mahogany
veneer is complete with a clean finish. Neither the scroll-top nor the feet and skirt show any repairs or evidence of having
been replaced. The glasses are old with old putty, but I’m hesitant to call them original. The tablet was restored by
Tom Moberg and looks great. The wooden dial is clean with gilded gesso and color decorations above and below the mainstem, as
was characteristic of Eli Terry. The hands are proper and period. The wooden 30-hour time-and-strike movement is running
and striking as desired. There are two period weights and an old pendulum bob, and a very good label. The door lock works
and there is a key. AAC sold an Eli Terry P&S in 2022 for $1360. If I was going to own just one pillar & scroll
clock, I think this would be it. $600–$1200.
