98.            $1600

Seth Thomas off-center pillar & scroll, 1818–1822.  This 30-inch example has elements of Thomas’ first pillar & scroll model, showing the large brass escape wheel through the dial, but with the later edition of the four-wheel, wooden strap movement (see Ly, Seth Thomas Clocks & Movements, Vol. 2, pages 657-659). The mahogany veneer is complete and the finish is clean; I think the scroll top, feet, and skirt are original, but I wouldn’t bet my 401K on it.  Both glasses are old, perhaps not 1820-old, and the putty is modern.  The tablet was repainted recently. The ST-style brass urn finials are old and on steel posts.  The dial was repainted by The Dial House, the hands are pewter remade in the correct style.  The refurbished movement will run and strike, with 30-hour cast iron weights compounded on wooden pulleys. Just a shred of a label.  AAC has sold this model in the last several years for $1984, $2400, and $2850.  $1600–$2600.
