Ansonia Clock Co. “Columbia” with Richard I, ca.
1904. One of Ansonia’s four massive black lacquered, cast-iron mantel clocks, 24 inches wide and 13 inches tall (along with
Eureka, Latonia, and Virginia). There are two high-relief figural panels on the front and one on each side depicting various
battle scenes from the Middle Ages, and well-matched to the detailed sculpture of Richard I, “Richard the Lion-hearted”, King of England
from 1189 to 1199, who was killed by a crossbow arrow while attacking the castle of Châlus in France. I cannot find this figural
in Ly’s book on Ansonia clocks, so it may not be an Ansonia figural. Note that the base is cracked when viewed from the back. The crack has been stabilized. The porcelain cartouche dial sits behind a flat beveled glass with ornate silvered hands, and
with an embossed gold metal background. The 8-day, time and half-hour strike Ansonia movement is running without issue. Note that the figural is not mounted to the case. This model is most often seen with Shepherd Boy, but I like it here with King
Richard. $1200–$1800.
