26. $600
New Hampshire banjo, ca. 1840. An early all-wood banjo
with lovely flame mahogany panels on the box and throat, and a wooden acorn finial. My consignor tells me this is of New Hampshire
origin, but I don’t see anything compelling to make that claim; the brass side-arms are unusual (note the dividers), and the door
latches also may be telling. The unsigned movement is not remarkable and mounts with diagonal corner screws. It is running
without problem, driven by a lead weight and a typical pendulum. The iron dial is likely original, mounts with L-turns, and
has very old paint and good numbering; the dial glass is old. The hands are old and unusual. There is a tin weight shield
but the tie-down is missing. $600–$800.
