New Haven Clock Co. “Elfrida”, ca. 1900. New
Haven made this model in several configurations, 8-day spring-driven time-only, time-and-strike, weight-driven (as here), and in a
30-day calendar configuration. It also came in oak, mahogany, and cherry. Lots of choices. This one is oak, 8-day
time-only, and weight-driven. The case is 49 inches long with a clean older finish. The trim pieces are all in order. The door glass is old, possibly original; the painted dial is probably original, unsigned, with light soiling and with some repair
work done at the top. The hands are New Haven. The brass plate movement is unsigned and mounts on a cast iron bracket,
with the pendulum suspended behind. The pendulum stick and bob may be a replacement. The beat scale has been polished
to death and there are just fragments of a label on the back. It is running without a hitch. Of the nine Elfridas on LiveAuctioneers,
only one is a weight-driven model; it also was oak (very dark) and sold for $550 in 2021 at Fontaine’s. $300–$550.
