LF & WW Carter “Ionic calendar”, 1862-1868. This is a rare model from these guys; I can find one example on the Antique Clocks Identification and Price Guide and one example
(under BB Lewis) on LiveAuctioneers. The walnut case is small, just 21 inches long, with grain-painted rosewood on the front. The dial glass has been replaced (the glass is slightly green), the lower glass may be original. The painted dial is original
with the original paint and some fading/wear. The hands are likely original; note that the weekday indicator hand is missing,
as is the sleeve and star on the back of the dial that would advance the weekday hand. The lower dial is paper and may be original,
as it is sealed inside the glass. The 8-day time-and-strike movement is unsigned. It is running and striking on the wire
gong, and the date and month hands are advancing. There is a torn label inside stating that this “B.B. Lewis patent perpetual
calendar…was made expressly for L.F. & W.W. Carter, Bristol, Conn”. This model is not shown in Ly’s book Calendar Clocks and
is not found in Miller & Miller Calendar Clocks either. As noted, there are two recorded sales, at R.O. Schmitt in 2014
for $2600 and at Apple Tree Auction Center in 2023 for $475. $250–$500.
