Antique American Clocks JULY 2024
129. $150
Waterbury Clock Co. “Lotus V.P.”, ca. 1878. This model, by the Nicholas Muller & Sons Foundry, was usually marketed by Kroeber and this may be a Kroeber clock, but there
is no label and the movement, which may be a replacement, is stamped Waterbury. It is not shown in either of Ly’s volumes on
Waterbury clocks. The spelter metal case is 19 inches tall, the door glass appears to be modern, although the putty does not. The finish on the case shows remnants of verdigris in the crevasses and recessed imprints; the Egyptian theme is evident throughout
and the paint on the figurehead may be original. The dial is paper, unsigned, the hands appropriate. The Waterbury 8-day,
time-and-strike movement is running but the strike, on an unmarked wire gong, is slow. The movement is mounted on wooden or
cork feet, suggesting that the movement is a replacement. The barrel pendulum is appropriate. As noted, there is no label
inside or out. Waterbury or Kroeber, a rare model; I can find no sales records in the Antique Clocks Identification and Price
Guide or on LiveAuctioneers. $150–$300.
