Wm. L Gilbert Clock Co. “Amphion”, ca. 1885. An excellent example of one of the premier late Victorian clocks in all its glory. The walnut case is 25 inches tall with a
rich patina; it looks to me like everything from the balls on top to the mirrors, with the exception of the mirror in the base, is
original, including the door glass. The paper dial has an older center section with the Gilbert logo, while the outer signed
paper dial appears to be a later replacement. The hands are proper. The 8-day, time-and-strike movement is signed and
running, striking on a cathedral gong, and regulated by the mirrored glass pendulum. There is a label on the back. A mighty
nice example. AAC sold an Amphion last year for $425, and it had issues. $400–$600.
