232. $300
E. Howard & Co. “No. 5 Regulator” banjo, ca. 1860. A beautiful
29-inch rosewood/grain-painted case with three newer glasses (not painted to Howard specs) and an original signed Howard dial. The case may not be Howard issue, as it has hook closures rather than push-buttons. The dial is original to the case and has
been touched up; the hands are replacements, again not to Howard specs. The 8-day, time-only movement is not signed; it runs
briefly, driven by an odd non-Howard weight, regulated by a Howard pendulum and damascened bob. There is a tie-down but no label;
the weight shield is a replacement. $300–$500.
