Howard & Davis “No. 4 Regulator” banjo, ca. 1858. A 32-inch cherry
case with rosewood grain painting, some of it lost on the bezel and half-round trim on front. The three glasses appear to be
original; the paper dial is well-preserved (all Howard & Davis banjos had signed paper dials). The hands are correct. The 8-day, time-only movement is signed, with a replacement weight and a proper pendulum stick and damascened bob. It runs for
a short while and stops. The weight shield may be a replacement; there is a pendulum tie-down. No label. A better-than-average
example of this classic. AAC sold a H&D No. 4 in 2022 for $750. $600–$800.
