214.         $50

E.N. Welch Mfg. Co. special order wall clock, ca. 1896.  This clock has a label on the back indicating that it was made for Fowler M.F.G. Co. Limited in New York City; there is not a Welch label, but the movement was made by Welch.  This same design, in a shelf model, is shown in Ly’s book on Welch clocks (pages 494-495); it is designated “Unknown No. 37” by Ly.  Fowler may have given it out to customers or dealers.  The black walnut case is 25 inches long with an old finish; the door glass is original, held in place with the original putty, and the gold stencil is still good. The painted dial has been lacquered and yellowed; the hands are period.  The 8-day, time and half-hour strike movement is signed and very oily and will not run.  It will strike on a wire gong; the alarm mechanism has been removed.  The metal pendulum may be a replacement, as the model may have had a sandwich glass pendulum originally, as seen in the shelf example in Ly’s book. There are two labels on the back, one with instructions and one showing the retailer (Fowler).  $50–$150.
