E. Howard & Co. “No. 70 Regulator”, ca. 1900.  Howard made this model in five sizes, with dials from 24 inches to 12 inches.  The one you see most commonly is the 12-inch dial model (see the two examples that follow); this is the 16-inch dial model.  The 41-inch case appears to be walnut, with an old finish; the finish on the bezel lacks the gloss present on the lower door, but wax might fix that slight difference in appearance.  Both glasses are old and wavy, but the dial glass is held in place with clips, rather than putty or a wooden band, suggesting (to me) that it has been replaced.  The tablet may have been repainted; the dial is so clean that it must have been repainted.  The hands are correct.  The movement is signed and marked ‘4’; there is a proper pendulum stick and damascened bob and a No. 70 iron weight, behind a wooden weight shield with a Howard pendulum tie-down.  The case and door are stamped ‘20’.  The clock is running without issue.  Fontaine’s sold a similar example last year for $3750, with a buyer’s premium of 26%; you’ll pay less than 15% on this clock at AAC.  Schmitt Horan sold an oak example last fall for $2200.  $3000–$4000.
