Seth Thomas Clock Co. “Regulator No. 19”, 1886–1913. The
ST Regulators No. 16 and 19 share the same case, movement, and dials, but differ in the pendulum, with the No. 16 having a round pendulum
bob and the No. 19 a two-jar mercury pendulum (early No. 16 cases were slightly thinner, but the thinner case was discontinued when
the No. 19 was introduced in 1886). To quote Tran Duy Ly in Seth Thomas Clocks & Movements, Vol. 1 (page 294) “To many collectors,
both beginning and advanced, these clocks represent the high point of the Seth Thomas legacy.” My clock mentor, Carroll Horton,
had thirty No. 19’s reproduced in China in the early 2000’s (I sold one last July), but this is an original. The 75-inch case
is mahogany and mahogany veneer with a clean finish. The four corner finials are original, the bottom center finial is a replacement. The crest has brass buttons along the top edge and a shell carving on top, with burled walnut panels. The inside backboard panel
is also burled. There are floral insets on the side corbels and two full-round side columns. The door glass is modern,
the four side glasses are original. The 12-inch dial has been repainted, the hands, including the sweep-seconds hand, are correct. The 8-day, weight-driven, time-only movement is mounted to the back of the dial with four threaded screws. The pendulum rod
hangs from the cast iron mounting bracket and shows rust and corrosion; the thumbprint vials are filled with lead shot and have brass
covers. I can replace the shot with 8 lb of mercury if you prefer (no shipping of mercury - pick up or delivery only). There is a raised beat scale at the bottom and an ST brass shell weight with knurled endcaps, suspended from a proper ST pulley. The clock is running with ease. As nice as you’ll find. Delivery to the eastern half of the US for $450; blanket-wrap
to the West Coast for $1000. $9000–$12,000.
Remember – Just a 10% buyer’s premium on this clock (and any clock over $2500).
