148.           $1000

Ansonia Clock Co. “Eureka with Dagobert”, ca. 1894.  One of Ansonia’s top of the line bases (Eureka) with the clock-topper Dagobert.  Both have been professionally refinished and look great; Dagobert is not attached to the base and can be removed or replaced; Eureka looks almost as good alone.  Eureka is 22 inches wide, and with Dagobert the pairing is 22 inches tall.  This pairing is shown in Ly, Ansonia Clocks & Watches, on page 405.  Note the gargoyles on each end, along with the extensive decorations.  The metal dial has painted numerals and a silvered bezel and sits behind a flat beveled glass.  The hands are correct.  The ornate visible escapement has ruby pallets. The signed 8-day round movement has a rack and snail strike on a cathedral gong; it is running and striking on the hours and half-hours. Dagobert was King of the Franks in the middle ages and ruled over Austrasia, now France and western Europe; he ruled from Paris and was much beloved.   Eureka with various toppers typically has sold for $1000 and up, but there are no recent sales. $1000–$1500.
