S.C. Spring “Cottage Column”, 1864-1868. An 11-inch case
veneered in rosewood with black columns and trim. Spring had worked with S.B. Terry and others, including I. Atkins, before
going into business on his own; in 1868 he joined Elisha Welch to form Welch, Spring and Co. This cottage is more often seen
with a Welch, Spring label, and I have not seen one before with just the Spring label. The old finish shows some patina and
both glasses are original, with some losses as would be expected. The dial has been repainted, the hands are not original. The small, 30-hour, time-only movement is unsigned and running strongly. There is a good label inside. No sales
of this early model, and only one Welch, Spring example, no sale price. I’m a big fan of this classically styled little clock. $50–$150.
