Brewster & Ingrahams 8-day steeple with cast iron backplate, 1843-1846.  This is a rare steeple from B&I with the cast iron backplate and cast iron cups for the brass springs.  The mahogany-veneered case is 20 inches tall with an old, dark finish.  Both glasses are original, the upper glass with the original putty and the lower glass held in place with wood strips.  The milk-glass tablet with an anchor in the middle shows considerable wear.  The original dial and paint also show losses and soiling; the original signature is stamped at the bottom.  The hands are original.  The 8-day brass movement is unsigned, although a script signature is inscribed on the front crossbar.  It will run briefly but the strike spring is either broken or unattached.  There is a good label behind plastic.  I have not seen a sale for this model, but several are shown in Ly’s book, Ingraham Clocks & Watches, pages 49-50. $250–$500.
