Chauncey Goodrich
miniature box clock, ca. 1853. Goodrich apprenticed with Joseph Ives and worked with John Birge and later JC Brown; he is best
known for his association with Samuel Smith, 1847-1852. When that business ended he worked on his own for a few years and then
made mechanical toys; he later worked for New Haven Clocks and Ansonia Clocks, eventually dying in 1895 in a poor house in New Haven
after losing all his savings in the stock market (probably the panic of 1893). This charming little clock is 10 inches tall
with an old glass and a lithograph transfer of a woman on a horse. The door is surrounded by concave mahogany or walnut trim,
the sides and top are stained pine. The dial is original and with the original paint; the hands are period and may be original. The small 30-hour, time-only movement is unsigned; it is running. There is no label. Smith & Goodrich made many small
cottage clocks but none this small; I can find no matching examples on LiveAuctioneers or the Antique Clocks Identification and Price
Guide. $250–$500.
