35.                  $500

Forestville Mfg. Co. shelf clock, 1842-1849.  An unusual shelf clock, 18 inches tall, with full columns on each side, good rosewood veneer all around, and turned finials on a simple flat top.  It looks like something is missing, but there is no evidence of a missing cornice or crest. The finial tips are damaged, and there are two holes in the back corners that could be mounts for additional turned finials. Both glasses are period/original, with the lower glass holding a very worn transfer of what appears to be the Grim Reaper with the words “Time cuts down all, both great and small” in a circle above him.  This famous saying is taken from the New England Primer of 1727 and was used to teach children the alphabet.  The painted zinc dial is original with minimal chipping; J.C. Brown’s signature is at the top.  The hands are proper but slight mismatches.  The 8-day, time-and-strike brass movement is signed and running, striking on a wire gong.  There is a good label inside.  I can find just one other example of this model on LiveAuctioneers and the Antique Clocks Identification and Price Guide, sold by Cottone’s in 2014 for $1550.  $500–$1000.
