26.                   $2500

J.C. Brown acorn shelf clock, 1847-1850.  A 24.5-inch laminated case with an original dial glass with gold trim and a modern lower glass with a Fenn-style tablet.  The side arms are not firmly attached; the rosewood case has a clean polished finish.  The painted dial has been touched up, renumbered and antiqued – it may have been repainted entirely.  The hands are appropriate and period. The 8-day brass, time-and-strike, remote-fusee movement is die-stamped ‘Forestville M.F.G. Co.’  It will run briefly and the strike runs unrestricted, as the fan has come off – it is in the bottom of the case.  The case retains the green wallpaper inside but the card label is a reproduction.  AAC has sold three acorns, most recently last January, for an average of $4000; this is as nice as any of them.  $2500–$4500.
