Silas B. Terry
column & cornice 8-day shelf clock, ca. 1835. A 32-inch case with mahogany veneer and two full columns veneered in flame
mahogany. The finish is dark. All three glasses appear to be replacements, the dial glass and mirror are modern, the tablet
nicely repainted. The wooden dial is peeling badly and needs to be replaced or repainted, the hands are period. The round
movement characteristic of SB Terry was made by Williams, Orton, & Preston, based on the standard anchor escapement mount (similar
movements made by Silas had semicircular anchor mounts). I can’t keep it running, but it does strike. There are two unusual
8.5-lb weights to drive it; the label, usually a small card label, is long gone. AAC sold a somewhat better example two years
ago for $772. $250–$500.
