23.                   $1000

Spencer, Hotchkiss & Co. Eight Day Repeating Brass Clock, 1829–1840.  This style of clock seems to be unique to this firm; there are several examples on internet auction sites and it is also shown in Distin & Bishop, The American Clock, on page 155.  The mahogany-veneered case is 42 inches tall with polished veneer all-around and three original finials.  The three glasses appear to be original, with the original putty, although the bottom door glass has a wooden backboard which I did not remove.  The center tablet is original and very well preserved.  Some of these clocks had a reverse-painted glass, or mirror, in the steeple; the mahogany panel appears to be original here.  The wooden dial is almost certainly original (note the key-wind openings) and shows some wear and soiling.  The hands are period/original.  The 8-day, time-and-strike movement with a repeating rack and snail strike is running and striking on a wire gong, driven by two period iron weights and regulated by an embossed pendulum bob.  There is a very good label inside.  This clock sold at Cottone’s last spring for $1000.  $1000–$1500.
