Angelus Clock Co. (Philadelphia, PA) prayer clock, 1874-1876. A second
example of this unusual and rare clock, this one in black lacquer with gold trim in the door around the dial; it has been repainted. A picture of the angel Gabriel announcing the coming of Christ to Mary is shown in the door; this picture is found in most Angelus
clocks. The glass is not old, the dial is glossy paper on a brass plate that may not be original. The hands are likely
replacements. The Seth Thomas 8-day, time and Angelus-strike movement is running and striking the Angelus 3-3-3-9 pattern on
a wire gong. There is no label, but there is a cardboard print of the Angelus Domini prayer on the back of the door that may
be original to the clock, although I don’t see any reference to the Angelus Clock Co. This is one of the two clocks that sold at
Fontaine’s in 2020 for $3250. $500–$1000.
