Riggs & Brother “No. 5 banjo”, 1866–1871. A business in Philadelphia
that specialized in nautical instruments including chronometers, and later, clocks. This is a standard No. 5 case that appears
to be walnut with considerable patina. The three glasses appear to be original; the dial has the original paint, but the numbering
and lettering has been strengthened, not quite professionally. The hands are period and correct. The unsigned 8-day,
time-only movement is running without problem; the pendulum is likely original, as is the bottom weight shield with the Riggs &
Brother beat scale. There is a Riggs & Brother label and a jeweler’s repair label from 1938. The average sale price
of a No. 5 banjo from any maker on AAC over the last three years is $426 (14 sales). $350–$450.
