189.           $1200

Joseph Ives New England mirror clock, ca. 1820.  Joseph Ives invented and patented this “reeded pilaster” mirror clock that is so popular today.  It is 57 inches long with the eagle finial; the finish is old and there are some poor repairs to the veneer cross-pieces.  The glasses are old and both have been properly repainted; the dial glass has several cracks that don’t detract too greatly.  The putty on both glasses is newer. The mirror is old but I doubt that it is original.  The flat painted metal dial looks to be original, the hands are very old but are not typical of these clocks.  The steel plate movement is typical, driven by two replacement weights.  The clock runs until the movement shifts out of plumb; a screw or two is needed to secure it to the backboard.  The interior of the case is painted in a style typical of Ives clocks and is likely original.  There is no label, and there are numerous filled holes in the backboard.  This is a pretty good example; AAC has sold three Ives New Hampshire mirror clocks in the last several years from $1200 to $1575.  These clocks do not hold up well and the movements usually do not run.  $1200–$1600.
