Wm. Gilbert Clock Co. “Regulator No. 9”, ca. 1901.  The 78-inch case came in walnut, oak, cherry, or ash, and I believe this case is refinished cherry, with carvings top and bottom. The square top finials and bottom finials are correct; the top finials are often missing from this model.  The door glass and two side glasses are original – I have no idea how they have survived this long.  The 12-inch dial is porcelain with the original hands, including the sweep-seconds hand.  The brass dial ring is so shiny that I think it may have been replated when the case was refinished.  The 8-day, time-only brass plate movement is not signed; it has a dead-beat escapement with retaining power and is driven by a polished brass weight and a polished pendulum bob on the correct/original stick.  There is a beat scale at the bottom; note the inset contrasting mahogany backboard.  This clock is running strongly.  AAC sold a walnut example last winter for $3350.  Delivery to the “lower 48” for $600 or less, based on distance.  $2500-$3500.
