163. $850
Welch, Spring & Co. “Regulator Calendar No. 1”, ca. 1878. A second example in a 54-inch case veneered in mahogany with a clean old finish. Note the round dial surround and veneered inner
ring; a similar model is shown on page 189 of Ly’s book on Welch clocks. The three glasses are old, the dial glass original
and the tablet repainted on a replacement glass. The 18-inch dial (16-inch chapter ring) is original with considerable flaking
and soiling; the hands are original. The upside-down 8-day weight-driven, brass-plate movement is running, driven by two lead
weights with brass shells, as shown in Ly’s description on page 189, and the calendar hands are advancing. The calendar dial
is also likely original, again with considerable flaking. The inside calendar cover retains the Welch, Spring and B.B. Lewis
label. As is common, there is no other label, but the black paper interior is present. There is a door key and two working
latches; note that the well-done base is modern. $850-$1000.
