Ithaca Calendar Clock Co. “No. 3 ½ Parlor”, ca. 1880. Perhaps the most sought-after shelf-calendar; there are numerous variations to the case and movements over the years – see Ly, Calendar
Clocks, pages 132–135. This example has both early and late manufacturing features, as is common. The case is 20.5 inches
tall, with the later-style crest; it also has later-style applied ornaments on the front and sides, but the trim is gold (early style)
rather than silver (later style). It is a one-piece case (later style) but has a two-part backboard (early style); the movement
and bell mount in the later style, with slight variation. The calendar glass is mounted in a walnut frame (later style), and
the logo on the dial is silver (later style). The pendulum bob is also the later style. The finish on the case is old
and the trim pieces show wear; a tip on the crest is missing. The dial glass is modern, the two lower glasses are period. The nickel hands on the dials are proper/original. The 8-day, time-and-strike movement is signed Welch and made for the ICCC;
it is running and striking on the nickel bell. The calendar weekday roller advances with the time but the date hand does not
and will need adjustment. The calendar is dusty and the weekday roller paper has decayed away; replacement roller papers can
be obtained from Joel Warren or on eBay. There is no label. Six sales already in 2023, averaging $1667. $1500–$2000.
