88. $500
Chauncey Jerome oversized steeple with remote
winding drums, 1845–1853. A 22.5-inch case with good rosewood veneer in a horizontal-grain pattern on the front and vertical
pattern on the sides. There is a key, but the door latch is nonfunctional. Both glasses are period/original with good
retention of the milk-glass pattern on the tablet. The dial has been repainted, with some wear from the movement of the hour
hand; the hands are likely original. The 30-hour time-and-strike movement is die-stamped Chauncey Jerome, New Haven; it will
run briefly and strike. The mounts for the movement are replacements and the backwall looks peculiar, but I did not remove the
movement; note that the pendulum is suspended from the top of the case. Both winding arbors are connected to two iron spools
at the bottom of the case, with springs inside; note that these are not fusees. Jim DuBois has suggested that this arrangement
was designed to allow Jerome to adapt a weight-driven movement to spring power. This clock was once owned by Ken Roberts, and
more recently by Jim Price. $500–$1000.
Thanks again to Jim DuBois for helping me out!
