65.              $2000

Birge & Fuller candlestick double-steeple with wagon-spring movement, 1844–1848.  A beautiful example with period glasses and flame mahogany veneer.  The case is 26 inches tall by 13.5 inches wide; I see no significant missing veneer or repairs.  The right front candlestick may be repaired about halfway up. All glasses are period, the lower tablet almost certainly original, with a possibly replaced middle tablet. The tablets appear to have been varnished to protect the paint, but the varnish has since yellowed; the black boarders may have been repainted.  The metal dial holds old paint with some touchup around the center opening, and likely original hands.  The 8-day time-and-strike brass movement is stamped Birge & Fuller and is running, but the strike side is unwilling.  It can be pressed to strike by hand.  It is driven by the accelerating lever spring (wagon-spring) in the bottom of the case, with a yellowed label behind plastic on the back wall.  With the period tablets this is an exceptional example of a highly sought-after model.  AAC sold a candlestick wagon-spring last winter that had repainted tablets for $2500.  $2000–$2600.
