E.C. Brewster
& Co. shelf clock, 1840–1843. J. Shaylor Ives was a partner and the creator of the coiled brass springs used in this and
other early Brewster clocks, most notably the early beehives. The case is 20.5 inches tall with rosewood veneer on the front
and mahogany veneer on the sides. The finish is clean and bright. There is an ivory escutcheon and a working latch and
key. Both glasses are old but may be replacements; the tablet was painted by T. Moberg and is signed. The heavy zinc dial
holds old paint in excellent condition, the hands are likely original. The movement was designed by Charles Kirk and has a cast
iron backplate with the presumably brass springs in iron cups. It is running and striking without problem, with a period pendulum
bob. There is a card label on the back wall. All in all, a very attractive example of an early spring-driven shelf clock. $200-$400.
