R. W. Patterson
& Co. Eight Day Brass Clock, ca. 1870. The label says “Toronto, Canada West” but there is no information on this firm inClockmakers and Watchmakers of America by Name and Place, Spittlers & Bailey, 2011. The case and the movement closely resemble
a Seth Thomas Column Large, although the 8-day time-and-strike movement is unsigned; I would guess Seth Thomas provided the case and
movement to this Canadian company. The two glasses and mirror are likely original; the original tablet is an image of the British
Royal Coat of Arms, appropriate for a Canadian clock. The contoured metal dial holds the original paint in good condition, the
hands are period and proper. There is one proper 8-day weight and one home-made one; there is a good label on the back wall. R.O. Schmitt sold a similar example in 2017 for $425; it is the only triple decker sales record, and there is one column and cornice
sale as well. $250–$450.
