Moses Barrett
8-day wooden works shelf clock, ca. 1830. Moses was born in Massachusetts but moved to Nova Scotia, Canada, by 1828, where he
was selling clocks in Amherst NS, and later Yarmouth. It appears that he was buying both movements and cases from Connecticut
clockmakers, although it is also suggested that he made some cases in Canada. This 39-inch case appears to be a typical triple
decker clock and was probably made in the US; the 8-day, time-and-strike wooden movement is unusual in that the strike chain is on
the right side. This was probably done to avoid patent infringement; suggested makers of movements for Canadian merchants include
Hiram Hunt, Riley Whiting, Samuel Terry, and Silas Hoadley, of which Samuel Terry is known to have made reverse-train 8-day movements. This case has carved half-columns with tortoise-shell columns in the middle section, but of course the main attraction is the British
heraldic carved splat with lions and a crown in the center. The three glasses are period, the dial glass possibly original,
the wonderful center glass a period replacement (note that it has a vertical crack on the right), and the lower tablet a wonderful
repaint. The wood dial is clean with elaborate gilded gesso decorations and period hands. The wooden movement is running
and striking, driven by 8-day weights compounded on wooden pulleys and regulated by an embossed period pendulum bob. Most of
the label is gone, but there is a shred of a label remaining with ‘RRETT’ printed that is strong evidence of a Moses Barrett label. This clock sold in 2017 for $1650 and is the only Moses Barrett clock on LiveAuctioneers. There is one pillar & scroll on
the Antique Clocks Identification and Price Guide. $1250–$1800.
