Silas Hoadley
shelf clock with alarm, 1813–1830. A 38-inch case with replacement pineapple finials. Good veneer all around, original
bronzed half-columns and splat. Two original glasses with the original putty and one old mirror, but probably not original;
an ivory escutcheon in the door with a key and working latch. The “Time is Money” lower tablet has probably been touched up
but looks good. The wooden dial is soiled but doesn’t want to clean up; the numbering and gilding is sharp. The time hands
are period/original but the alarm hand is a clever make-do replacement. The 30-hour time-and-strike “upside-down” wooden movement
has ivory bushings as advertised; it will strike and run for a short while. The alarm was untested. Inverting the time-and-strike
chains was probably to avoid patent infringement with a certain Mr. Terry, who Mr. Hoadley worked for prior to setting out on his
own. A nice label inside and three period weights, with period dust covers on top. AAC sold a similar example a year ago
for $253. $200–$300.
