Eli & Samuel Terry pillar & scroll, 1824-1827. Samuel was Eli’s younger brother (by two years); this was his first official venture into clock manufacture, where he learned to make
wooden clocks. After three years he set out on his own and made and sold clocks for 7 years under his own name, and later with
others. Clocks from this first venture with his brother are not uncommon. The case is 31 inches tall with the solid brass
finials, likely old replacements, on wooden posts. The mahogany veneer is all good, the crest and skirt appear to be original,
with no obvious repairs. Both glasses are old but probably not original, the tablet a wonderful repaint. The wooden dial
board has been extensively cleaned and touched up and secured against a middle horizontal split. The hands are proper. The 30-hour wooden movement is running and striking on the iron bell, driven by two old weights. There is a good label inside
and new tin dust covers on the back, and a working lock and key. This is a Jeff Villet-restored clock, meaning it is as perfect
as it can be. If you have been thinking about buying a P&S for your collection, you can’t go wrong with a Villet-restored
clock. And you can’t beat these prices. This is the first Eli & Samuel Terry clock I have had to offer. $400-$600.
