Terry Clock Co. fly fishing reels,ca. 1875. It may surprise you (it surprised me) that the Terry Clock Co. did considerable business selling fly fishing reels
in the 1870’s and 1880’s. Silas B. Terry obtained a patent for his reels in 1871, while he was co-owner of the Terry Clock Co.
with his four sons. The sale of reels wasn’t enough to prevent bankruptcy, but it may have delayed it. The two reels shown
are the most common versions extant, but other designs were also marketed; you can read about it in this NAWCC Bulletin article by
Steven Vernon (Dec 1992, page 713). Both are brass, the larger one 2 1/8 inches in diameter, the smaller 1 7/8 inches. The patent date (Nov 14 1871) is stamped on the foot. The Terry Clock Co. appears to have been one of the largest American suppliers
of fishing reels during this period. Who knew?! $100-$200.
