Antique American Clocks February 2023
RB-2. $150
E.N. Welch Mfg. Co. “Sampson”, ca. 1900. A second member of the Welch Spanish-American War series. Rear Admiral William T. Sampson was responsible for the blockade of
Cuba and oversaw the capture of Spanish Admiral Cervera’s fleet in the Battle of Santiago Bay in 1898. His ship was the New
York. The pressed wood oak case is 24 inches tall with a clean, old finish. The glass has several cracks but is stable;
the old/original paper dial is yellowed but has the Welch name at the top; the minute hand is an improper (but close) replacement. The movement is a Sessions 8-day, time-and-strike; it is running and striking and may not be a wrong movement, as Sessions bought
Welch in 1903. The pendulum is a Welch/Sessions pendulum. There are remnants of a label on the back. Sampson is
an uncommon clock; this one sold last year for $200. $150-$300.
