Antique American Clocks February 2023
PG-12. $200
Wm. Gilbert Clock Co. “Amphion”, ca. 1885. The 25-inch walnut case has undergone considerable restoration: the crest and the base, with their ornamental elements, are replacements; the figure head and mount may be original. The upper right decorative piece and the upper left trim piece are also replacements. The original casework has a considerable patina. On the positive side, the mirrors are original and the door glass is probably so. The paper dial is strongly toned, the hands are correct, but the minute hand is a replacement. The Gilbert 8-day, time and half-hour strike movement is running and striking without problem, regulated by the Amphion cut-glass mirror pendulum. There is a good label on the back. Original Amphions sell for $400-$800. $200-$400.
Craig Hanna suggests that the base is an original, but with a later-year design change; the crest also was changed to a simpler design like this one. However, I believe this crest is a replacement, judging from the back side.
