Antique American Clocks February 2023
TR-6. $50
Unknown brass eight-day shelf, ca. 1850. A standard 32-inch, two-door, three-glass case with wonderful rosewood veneer, cleaned and polished. The case is very much like
a Seth Thomas Column model, but the label inside says it is a Welch, Spring & Co. perpetual calendar clock. Clearly it is
not, and I suspect the backboard is a replacement. However, it may not be a Seth Thomas either, as the movement is an unsigned,
strap-brass movement more typical of John Birge – see, for example, #142 in the January auction. All three glasses are period
and may be original, with two well-preserved tablets. The movement has no weight cords so I could not test it, and it also lacks
a pendulum rod, bob, and weights. All three are easy to fix. This clock could be restored with a little effort or could
be parted out. It is probably worth more than the starting price if sold as parts. $50-$150.
