JG-9. $100
Unknown maker Frankenclock, ca. ? This
34-inch solid oak case is heavy and once held an electric movement of some sort, given the two electrical holes in the top of the
case, and the unusual cutouts on the front of the case under the dial. It now holds an unsigned Seth Thomas 8-day, time-only
movement, and the clock apparently wants to be an ST No. 2 Regulator. It is not. The pendulum swings too close to the
weight, such that the weight interferes with the pendulum. It doesn’t run, and I’m not sure it can. The dial is just awful,
a matte paper-printed dial that has smeared numbering and has yellowed, with scuff marks, on an aluminum pan. The three hands
are Seth Thomas, and the dial appears to be a copy of a ST dial. The weight appears to be ST issue but has lost some brass on
the surface. There is no label to be found, or initials that might tell us this was a bench-made case. It looks like a
Chelsea or Boston Clock Co. case, but that is a stretch; note the unusual hinges, the unusual latch to the dial bezel, and the skeleton
key latch to the lower door. I recommend taking this monstrosity apart and saving the movement and cast-iron mount, the pendulum
stick and bob, the hands, and the weight. Together they are worth more than the starting price. Discard the awful dial. $100-$300.
