236.             $1000

Angelus Clock Co. (Philadelphia, PA) prayer clock, 1874-1876.  The 21-inch case is wood made to look like marble, with a faux finish.  It appears to be the original finish. The single glass in the door is likely original; there is a paper picture of an angel appearing to Mary to inform her of an upcoming blessed event taped into the lower window, and is as found in two other examples of Angelus clocks.   The paper dial is worn and torn and bears the ST logo and proper hands; the 8-day, time-and-strike movement was made by Seth Thomas and has a modified strike chain that strikes at 6 am, noon, and 6 pm to call to prayer.  These clocks were sold to churches and monasteries. I could not get the clock to strike, but it does run.  There is an Angelus Clock Co. label inside, obscured by the wire gong base.  I found three sales of clocks by this firm, none identical to this one; two sold as a lot at Fontaine’s in 2020 for $3250, the third sold in Australia in 2019, no price available.  $1000-$2000.
