Chauncey Jerome “David Crockett” cottage, ca. 1850. An 11.75-inch case with a decalcomania dial surround and an upside-down movement in which the pendulum is suspended from the top of
the case. The case is softwood and probably was painted black originally, but is now stained and to look like walnut or mahogany. The door and the front of the case, as well as the sides of the base are veneered in walnut or mahogany. The dial has been repainted
and antiqued and appears to be original to this case; some examples had wooden dials. The hands are appropriate but not necessarily
original. The 30-hour, time-only movement is signed at the top. The spring is unwound and when wound expands into the
space between the plates – the two rods that extend outward from the top of the movement are placed to keep the spring from expanding
sideways (but they don’t work). This dog won’t hunt. The pendulum rod is suspended from the top and the crutch is inverted;
Jerome also mounted this movement upside down at the top of the clock and used a dial with a winding port at 11. This upside-down
version is less common. There is no label. Horton’s Antique Clocks sold one of these in 2017 for $177. $150-$250.
