MO-12. $50
Unknown maker New Hampshire mirror clock, ca. 1825. The
34-inch case has been bastardized with a fake wood/antique finish and a beveled mirror. The dial glass is old but most of the
original reverse-painted dial-surround has been lost and the missing portions repainted badly, and still peeling. Ugh. Inside is an unusual movement, unsigned, that I cannot find in any other mirror clock. It would appear to run 8 days, time-only,
on the replacement weight; it is running feebly now and certainly needs disassembly and cleaning. I believe at one time this
movement held a strike or alarm mechanism on the left, striking a bell on top of the case: matched pivot holes can be seen on
the upper left and they match an opening in the dial that would allow access to a winding arbor. There also is a filled opening
in the top of this case that would have allowed a strike hammer arm to pass through. Thus, the dial and movement likely go together;
the hands are inappropriate replacements. The distance of the dial from the front glass is too great, arguing against a movement-dial-case
match. ‘Bastardized’ again comes to mind. This is an example of a clock that should probably be parted out. Did
you know that I will part out some clocks listed in this auction? Just specify in the notes section of the bid sheet what you
want, and if you are the high bidder I will send or deliver just that or those parts. $50-$150.
