MO-17.           $50

Mitchell, Atkins & Co. 30-hour “Improved Alarm Clock”, 1831-1835. The Atkins were Rollin and Irenus; they made wooden movement clocks, some better than this one, but this one is notable for the alarm on the wooden movement, with the alarm weight hanging in the back right corner.  I’ve not seen an alarm weight like this before, with a right-angle corner in the back and a beveled front to accommodate the time weight.  The case is 34 inches tall with stenciled half-columns and splat, all very faded.  The dial glass and mirror are original, with the mirror behind a wooden backboard. The wooden dial is in good shape, the hands correct; note the winding port for the alarm at the upper right.   The clock doesn’t want to run, but it will strike; the alarm wasn’t tested.  There is a good label inside.  I found one other example like this that sold at a small auction down the road from Lexington for $70.  Three examples on Antique Clocks Price Guide, none like this.  I will part out this clock; specify what you want in the notes section of your bid sheet.  $50-$100.
